Chapter 15

Thursday, I went to the beauty shop to get my hair professionally done for the trip. I also stopped by the nail salon to get my manicure and pedicure touched up. I had to get several more things for my trip, so I went shopping with my mom. We decided that she would drop me off at the airport on Saturday morning, and Imani had offered to pick me up the following Saturday when I returned. After I picked up my last few items, I stopped by the jewelry store the get my charm bracelet cleaned. It was the only piece of jewelry I wore every day, so it needed to be shined up.

When I got home, I began packing my bags. I popped the tags off almost everything I put in the bag. I needed a new summer wardrobe, and this vacation was just an excuse to purchase new things. I had checked several websites and realized the nights in Catalina could get cool, even in July, so I packed accordingly. Hot days and cool nights in Devon’s arms would be perfect. I was packing my two large Michael Kors luggage bags, along with two purses to match different outfits I was bringing.

Friday, I spent much of the day cleaning, organizing, and packing. Sterling and I had dinner reservations at 6 PM, and tickets to a comedy show following dinner. Dinner was great; Sterling had a way of picking the nicest restaurants with delicious food. The comedy show was hilarious, and most of the comedians were interactive with the audience. We sat in the VIP section as usual. Everything was VIP with Sterling, but it didn’t always have to be. I knew he was high on the social ladder, but that’s why his mom thought I liked him “because of the money.” Now it made me feel differently about enjoying the VIP status as much as I did. Maybe that would be a part of being with Sterling, and if things ever went beyond just dating I would have to get used to it. Devon was more down to earth, and I was used to practical; getting used to exaggerated was fun, but I was okay with practical too.

After the comedy club, Sterling came over to my apartment. As we sat on the couch, Sterling said, “Are you going to miss me while you’re gone?”

“Sure I am,” I said, believing that I would even if I didn’t want to. “What will I ever do without you?” I said, attempting to boost his ego.

“Oh, I’m sure you will think of something,” Sterling said. It seemed as if his brain was spinning, like he was trying to figure something out. “So where are you flying into again?”

“Long Beach California,” I said, wondering what he was thinking.

“Are you spending the entire trip there?” Sterling quizzed.

I was starting to think he was making a connection to me being in LA and Devon going to USC. I tried to throw him off his train of thought.
